Too Much Water?

Is it possible to drink too much water? The answer is yes. People who drink too much water can develop what's called "water intoxication"-their blood becomes effectively diluted, leading to disorientation, nausea, and even death. This is most common with endurance athletes like marathon runners, but even the average athlete can experience it on a milder level after vigorous exercise.

Instead of worrying about this remote possibility, follow Dr. Agatston's guidelines and drink when you're thirsty. And if you're participating in some serious sweat-generating exercise, maintain your electrolyte balance by replacing your bottle of water with a sugar-free sports drink. As with everything else in life, it's important to maintain a proper balance between thirst and saturation instead of always going to extremes. Right-click here to download pictures.
