Subject: Re: [Sndbox] Can sushi really kill you?
Any food can kill you if ingested or prepared improperly, but little as quickly and certainly as fugu. The flesh of the puffer fish (fugu) is considered a delicacy in Japan. It is prepared by chefs specially trained and certified by the government to prepare the flesh free of the toxic liver, gonads, and skin. Despite these precautions, many cases of tetrodotoxin poisoning are reported each year in patients ingesting fugu. Poisonings usually occur after eating fish caught and prepared by uncertified handlers. The end result, in most cases, is death. This is one of the most delicate dietary balancing acts on the planet. This paragraph above doesn't really say why fugu is a delicacy, but the reason is it works like a recreational drug. The trick is to eat just enough of the tetrodotoxin to produce the mind-altering effects without crossing the toxicity threshold, which is not very high. That also means the chef must consider the weight of the prospective diner!
Best wishes and God bless,
Lowell
