"Firefly" and "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" (5th Season) on DVD
Joss Whedon (the creator of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer") brought his
clout and creativity to bear in "Firefly", now available on DVD.
Hundreds of years in the future, after a bitter galactic civil war, the
crew of the all-purpose, Firefly-class spaceship Serenity attempts to
survive. Serenity's captain, Malcolm Reynolds, was on the losing side of
the conflict and the ship must stay on the fringes of the newly formed
Union of Planets, taking dangerous bootlegging jobs while keeping away
from the Reavers, a cannibalistic species. This four-disc set includes
all 14 episodes from this cult hit, including select episode commentary,
three featurettes (including a "making-of" for the show), several
deleted scenes, a gag reel, and much, much, more.

IMDb MOVIE OF THE DAY
101 Reykjav�k takes the sexual taboo found in films such as Spanking the
Monkey a step further in its effort to tell an unorthodox coming-of-age
story. Hlynur (Hilmir Sn�r Gu�nason) is nearly 30, milking social
service and living with his mother Berglind (Hanna Mar�a Karlsd�ttir)
with whom he shares a similar sense of humor and taste for the same drug
("No hash over Christmas for both of us," she insists early on). Hlynur
languishes his time looking at Internet porn, drinking and having
passionless sex; the narration, however, indicates how he really feels
about life as the camera moves from bars to bedrooms, and clever
subtitling gives us insight into his private thoughts. His mother lives
a mundane life until her relationship with her flamenco teacher Lola
(Victoria Abril) catches heat. Lola moves in for the holidays and she
and Hlynur spend a drunken New Year's Eve together while Berglind is off
visiting family. Turns out Lola walks the slippery line between hetero
and homosexual, guaranteeing an uneasy start to the new year. Berglind
returns home with a bang, announcing that she and Lola are in love.
Then, when Lola becomes pregnant and makes plans to bring up the baby
with her lover, father-to-be Hlynur sinks deeper into his interior
world. This anti-hero, sensing the need to take any sort of action,
awakens from his malaise, perhaps spurred on by the realization that his
life has meaning and his decisions have impact on other people. Director
Baltasar Korm�kur, making a splash with his first film, showcases a
knack for meaningful black comedy, with a stylistic approach that never
obscures the story; in fact, the camerawork and editing turn secondary
scenes into captivating portraits of Icelandic family and social life. -
