Osbourne needs steel plate, doctors say

LONDON -- Singer Ozzy Osbourne will require a steel plate attached to his neck following a near-fatal quad bike accident, according to a London Mirror report. Doctors said Monday that the 7-inch steel plate will help stabilize the vertabrae that Osbourne cracked when he wrecked his bike Dec. 8 at his Buckinghamshire estate. The delicate procedure, according to Alan Gardner, spinal surgeon at Hartwood Hospital in Essex, will be performed when the former Black Sabbath lead singer is strong enough. The permanent plate will prevent further damage if Osbourne falls on his head or neck in the future. Osbourne also broke eight ribs and his collarbone in the accident. Osbourne's wife, Sharon, said that her husband's recovery could take "probably about six months," the London Sun reported Tuesday. He is currently recovering at Wexham Park Hospital in Slough, where he was taken off the ventilator Sunday and is joking with the nurses, Sharon Osbourne said. Osbourne celebrates this week his first No. 1 record during his 33-year career, "Changes," a duet with his daughter Kelly.
