PARIS (Reuters) - The Eiffel Tower was briefly closed Wednesday when actors and stagehands tried to drape a banner on the Paris landmark to protest a reform in their unemployment benefits.

A spokeswoman at the tower said it was closed for around 20 minutes as police questioned a group of around 100 show business workers who failed in their bid to hang a banner at the top of the 1,063-foot structure. They were halted before they could gain access to the tower.

Paris police have stepped up security measures for New Year's Eve amid fears of violence and the possibility of a terror attack. Some 4,500 policemen will patrol hotspots such as the French capital's famed Champs Elysees.
