The New York Police Department said the actor, known to suffer from bouts of depression, was reported missing on Sunday, adding that they were investigating the matter.

Gray, 62, got his start in show business as a teen-ager when he staged a one-man show riffing on his angst-ridden youth in Rhode Island. His small role in 1985's "The Killing Fields" formed the basis for "Swimming to Cambodia" (1987).

Gray co-founded the experimental Wooster Group theater in New York in 1977 and also appeared in such films as "Kate & Leopold," "The Paper," and "Beaches."

The New York Times said that Gray's older brother, Rockwell Gray, had last seen his brother over Christmas and that he seemed depressed at that time.

"I wouldn't say he was in a happy state," Rockwell Gray told the Times. "He's been in a fairly depressed condition for some time."
