THE FOUNDATION
"It is error alone which needs the support of
government. Truth can stand by itself. Subject opinion to coercion: whom will
you make your inquisitors?" --Thomas Jefferson
______----********O********----______
INSIGHT
"Honesty does not require posturing. In fact, the two
things are incompatible. Nor does objectivity require neutrality....
Objectivity refers to an honest seeking of the truth, whatever that truth may
turn out to be and regardless of what its implications might be. Neutrality
refers to a preconceived 'balance,' which subordinates the truth to this
preconception.... The truth is where you find it -- and you don't find it
with a
preconceived 'balance' expressed in mealy mouth words." --Thomas Sowell
______----********O********----______
ICTUS IMPRIMIS
"A soul can never attain the knowledge of God
unless God
Himself in His condescension takes hold of it and raises it up to Himself. For
the human intellect lacks the power to ascend and to participate in divine
illumination, unless God Himself draws it up -- in so far as this is possible
for the human intellect -- and illumines it with rays of divine light."
--The Philokalia
______----********O********----______
FAMILY
"The most important reason that people save is the hope
of providing a better life for their children. A society that punishes that
impulse with taxes is foolish. It is draining energy from the single most
powerful engine of capital accumulation. If the super-rich don't want their
kids
to get their money, fine. Donate every penny of it to someone else. But
they are
wrong to block others from exercising a free choice." --Lew Rockwell
______----********O********----______
CULTURE
"We usually look at academics, not the cultural nexus.
We have to change that. Cultural diversity, or multiculturalism, in the schools
is hip and trendy, but most attitudes are rooted in the home. We won't change
them by merely celebrating different food days or holidays." --Suzanne
Fields
______----********O********----______
LIBERTY
"I have little interest in streamlining government
or in
making it more efficient, for I mean to reduce its size. I do not undertake to
promote welfare, for I propose to extend freedom. My aim is not to pass laws,
but to repeal them. It is not to inaugurate new programs, but to cancel old
ones
that do violence to the Constitution, or that have failed in their purpose, or
that impose on the people an unwarranted financial burden. I will not attempt
to discover whether legislation is 'needed' before I have first determined
whether it is constitutionally permissible. And if I should later be attacked
for neglecting my constituents' interests, I shall reply that I was informed
their main interest is liberty and that in that cause I am doing the very
best I
can." --Barry Goldwater
______----********O********----______
THE GIPPER
"With freedom goes responsibility. Sir Winston
Churchill once said you can have 10,000 regulations and still not have respect
for the law. We might start with the Ten Commandments. If we lived by the
Golden Rule, there would be no need for other laws." --Ronald
Reagan

GOVERNMENT
"There are few areas of government abuse that infuriate
me more than does spending on the so-called 'arts.' In one of the most
incredible scams ever perpetrated on the American taxpayer, tens of
thousands of
marginal artists across the country have discovered a way to use the police
power of government to compensate for the lack of actual marketable artistic
skills. ... The general philosophy here is that if you cannot get the
uncultured
great unwashed to purchase your works of art in a free market, then you
just get
the government to seize taxpayer funds to buy your valued works anyway. ... To
show you how I can see both sides of an issue, I can give you at least one
example of how government spending on the arts benefits the public. It
helps us
locate local government offices. If you're driving down the road looking for a
government office -- a county annex, for instance -- just keep your eyes open
for ugly sculpture. If you see some sculpture that causes you to say 'Who in
the hell would pay good money for a piece of junk like that?' turn in. That's
the government office you're looking for. Every time a politician votes to
dump
a load of taxpayer money into the artistic community, that politician is
telling
you and every other taxpayer that it is his considered opinion that the
government needs that money to spend on the arts community more than you
need it
to spend on such things as health care, home payments, debt reduction and your
children's education. Unbridled arrogance." --Neal Boortz

RE: THE LEFT
"The race is on. Not for the presidency, but for the
Jewish presidency, and the Jewish vote. Joe Lieberman aside, we recently heard
that Wesley Clark whispered to a supporter concerned about his stance on
Israel,
'Did you know my father was Jewish?' Not to be outdone, within days Democratic
front-runner Howard Dean made sure we all found out about his devout Jewish
wife
and Jewish kids. John Kerry, however, had almost a year on either of them,
because he found out back in February that his paternal grandfather was Jewish
and his grandmother had 'Jewish roots.' But perhaps they are all just
following
the lead of Hillary Clinton, who in 2000 got a boost to the Senate after the
Forward, a Jewish newspaper, reported on her Jewish step-grandmother. 'That's
the big thing this season, Jewish ancestry,' Mr. Clark said recently.... So now
it's up to Al Sharpton and Carol Moseley Braun to reveal their Jewish
roots. In
this day and age, it wouldn't be such a stretch. Recall that in 2002 Bill
Clinton told a Jewish group in Toronto that if Israel were invaded, 'I would
personally grab a rifle, get in a ditch, and fight and die.' So not only
was he
the first black president; he was also the first Jewish president. Sorry,
folks, we already had a Jew in the White House. And it brought us intifada
II."

POLITICAL FUTURES
"We cannot stop professional racists from stirring even
imaginary pots as they try to keep their jobs, but we should remember that the
road to better race relations lies where it always has: Looking at each
other as
human beings and not as representatives of groups or classes." --Charley
Reese

FOR THE RECORD
"The U.S. Postal Service will release a 'Black
Heritage'
postage stamp on Jan. 20 honoring Paul Robeson, a prominent entertainer and
athlete who nonetheless was a longtime member of the Communist Party. He also
was an unrepentant Stalinist and was married to another Communist Party
activist
with whom he had a son and namesake educated in the Soviet Union and in London
by the Soviet Embassy. Next time, no doubt, the postal bureaucrats will be
honoring Ezra Pound and Leni Riefenstahl."

)"I
continue to be amazed, amused, angered and provoked to action by
The Federalist. Amazed at the stuff you
guys dig up, amused at the subtle wit employed in writing about it, angered at
what the Leftists are doing to our country and way of life, and finally,
provoked to action where I can be of use. Your
Digest
is brilliant in it's analysis."
"I applaud President Bush for
bringing the immigration issue to the forefront -- clearly the present system
isn't working and no president has addressed this issue in any meaningful way
since W.W. II. However, I am against legalizing illegals! I'm greatly
frustrated
at the ever-increasing blurring of the lines between legal and
illegal..."
"I do not agree with President Bush's immigration, amnesty,
and 'guest worker' policies. These are illegal criminal invaders and must be
deported. What is the sense of spending Billions of dollars on 'Homeland
Security' if we are going to throw open our borders to anyone that can walk
across them?"
"I agree with your analysis of the issue. You have a
realistic view as opposed to the knee jerk idealist view of too many who call
themselves conservatives. Deport them all -- that is a certain approach to
economic ruin."
"
Federalist No. 04-01 asserts
that the Administration's proposed immigration reform is not politically
motivated. You suggest that Bush will be re-elected even if he fails to carry
California; therefore the initiative has no political overtones. Your argument
is neither logical nor persuasive."
Editor's Reply: We stated, "Second, the
Bush plan is, in part, politically timed and motivated." Your complaint does
not comport with what we wrote.
"You guys sound like a propaganda
machine for the Bush Administration on this one. 'Jobs Americans are unwilling
to do?' That's a tired old line."
Editor's Reply: Right, the produce fields
in Florida and California are full of white guys in sneakers....
"Thank
you for your thoughtful analysis of the President's Immigration Initiative! I
am so tired of those on both the Right and Left criticizing this plan --
apparently without examining its content. One wonders if anyone (besides
The Federalist staff) has actually read
the proposal prior to 'evaluating' it. Thank you for your reasoned
analysis!"
"The immigrants under Bush's plan will be allowed to stay in
the U.S. for a given period of time, but what happens if they have children.
Won't their children then be considered U.S. citizens? What happens
then?"
Editor's Reply: Then they would have an family heritage like many
other Americans! Not all of our ancestors were processed through Ellis Island.
"Is there any mystery about why no Demos will challenge 'The Reverend'
Al Sharpton's bona fides as a presidential candidate? Here's a guy who has
never
been elected to anything, never held a job, not qualified for anything, but
nobody says squat about his position as a candidate for President of the United
States. Could it be his race? As standup comedian Jakov Smirnoff always says,
'What a country!' "
"Regarding Charles Pierce's supremely asinine quote
about Mary Jo Kopechne -- you really should print some kind of editor's content
warning before reprinting anything that patently absurd -- I almost choked when
I read it."
"In
Federalist No.
04-01, you stated 'A warm welcome home to soldiers of the Army's 101st
"Screaming Eagles," who began returning to Fort Campbell, Kentucky, this week
after nearly a year in Iraq providing Saddam's henchmen their 'Rendezvous with
Destiny.' Hooah!' 'Hooah' is used by the Marines, not the Army."
Editor's
Reply: Not according to our staff Gunny! Ooohrah is Marine-eze for Hooah!
Semper
Fi!
"
Federalist No. 04-01 reported
that the most recent Congressional pay raise took effect on January 1st. What
happened to the 27th Amendment, which states that pay raises may not take
effect
until after an election?
Editor's Reply: Silly you! Congress stopped paying
attention to the Constitution in 1850.
"Please cancel my subscription. I
enjoyed reading
The Federalist until you
started all the Bush bashing."
"Does
The
Federalist ever take a position against the
administration?"
Editor's Reply: See reader comment above....

THE LAST WORD
"McGovern was an authentic war hero in World War II.
Howard Dean showed up at the Army recruiting office with a note from his doctor
and a fake limp to get out of serving in Vietnam -- before repairing to Aspen
for several months of skiing. In Dean's defense, I suppose that, technically
speaking, 'spinelessness' would be considered a debilitating back condition.
[This is not tantamount to] taking off in jets that fly at the speed of sound
while training to be a fighter pilot in the Texas Air National Guard.)" --Ann
