When a tuxedo-clad Mel Gibson took the stage on Jan. 11 to receive a People's
Choice Award for being 2003's favorite actor, he couldn't have seemed more a man
of the people. He good-naturedly thanked his fans from the bottom of his heart
for honoring him, receding hairline and all. It was classic Mel. And completely befitting, considering the 48-year-old is
about to unveil his most risktaking movie to date, about history's arguably
biggest man of the people -- Jesus Christ. The film, The Passion of the
Christ, is Gibson's graphic depiction of the last hours of Jesus of
Nazareth's life and crucifixion. It is, needless to say, no Lethal
Weapon. But it is violent and reportedly graphic. It has also been an enormous labor of love for this actor whose last
directorial outing, Braveheart -- another graphically violent film, which
garnered five Oscars -- was in 1995. Mel says he's been obsessed with The Passion for the last 12 years.
"That's when I started to investigate the roots of my faith," he told
Star. "I had always believed in God, but I kind of drifted. I needed
something more if I was going to survive."
