DOUBLE THREAT Buscemi (left, with James Gandolfini) both acts in a few episodes and directs an installment this season

The fifth and penultimate season of HBO's Mob drama finds Tony still separated from Carmela (prompting a return to Dr. Melfi's office), but this time his business troubles stem less from who might go into jail and more from who is coming out. After reading an article explaining that many wiseguys locked up after the RICO trials of the 1970-90s are now finishing their sentences, creator David Chase decided to complicate Tony's life by loosening many jailed mobsters who are eager to get back to business. ''We call them the class of 2004,'' he says.

One prominent freed bird will be Tony's cousin, also named Tony; he's played by Steve Buscemi, who was already a part of the ''Sopranos'' family, having directed two episodes (he'll also helm one this season). Chase says he was initially too shy to ask film vet Buscemi to take a TV acting gig; he was also skittish about inviting auteur Peter Bogdanovich (who returns as Melfi's shrink) to direct an episode. It turns out both Buscemi and Bogdanovich were eager to expand their roles but too nervous to ask. Explains Chase: ''Everybody was too polite.'' And we all know how important etiquette is on ''The Sopranos'': Remember how tidy Tony left Ralph's apartment after cutting off his head? (March 7)
