Personally, I instrumented HTTPUtils to do this logging for me, on the
client side (only).  This was just an easy hack in the post method, at
the point where the bOutStream is written, at the point after the response
headers have been read and assembled into linebuf, and at the point
after the entire response content has been read into ds.

I would love to see something a bit better designed for this, perhaps by
having an abstract version of SOAPHTTPConnection which could be customized
by extension, and allowing RPCMessage to take the (abstract version of)
SOAPHTTPConnection as an optional setting.
