My task with soap and tomcat has come to an end for now. How do I unsubscribe from the mail list?

Check the WSDL (down in the bindings) to see whether the service was written for rpc/encoded or document/literal. If it is the latter, you will have to jump through some hoops to get Apache SOAP to work with it (although it is *not* impossible for most services).
