No patch is needed. If you have the latest release, you have the code referenced in the FAQ. The nightly builds add some additional compatibility.
If you are just getting started, I recommend you look at Apache Axis, which is the next generation SOAP implementation from Apache (http://ws.apache.org/axis/). This interops very nicely with MS. If you are determined to use Apache SOAP, check out the interop VB client examples I have at http://www.scottnichol.com/soap.htm.
