======================
New England Slope Race
Saturday SEP 25, 1999*
Morningside Flight Park
Claremont, New Hampshire
========================
Morningside Flight Park, one of the top ten hang gliding,
parasailing, and ultralight pilot training facilities in
the country, is hosting an R/C sailplane slope race. MFP is
located near the Connecticut River, which separates Vermont
and New Hampshire. Information about the site and surrounding
area, hotel listing, and a map to the site are available at:
<biz.fcgnetworks.net/morningside>
Jim Davis gave us an RC sailplane pilot's view of the site
in his article in the FEB 1999 issue of R/C Soaring Digest.
We plan to fly three classes, double elimination each class.
The number of planes flown in each heat will be determined by
the number of entries. Two to four planes per heat are expected.
The classes will be:
1. 48-inch Foamie Combat plane race.
2. 60-inch Sportsman race. (two control functions, no computer Tx)
3. Unlimited race. (FAI maximum wing loading of 24.5 oz / sq ft)
Alternate: HLG (flown in case we have lighter winds than expected)
* It's no fun to travel for a slope race and have insufficient
wind or wrong-direction wind on race day, so we'll be trying an
innovation: We will make a race or no-race decision the evening
before, based on the late afternoon National Weather Service
forecast and we will notify contestants via e-mail.
We will try first for SAT SEP 25 with SEP 26 in case good winds
look like they will be delayed a day. In case of major rain, or
really wrong wind direction, the race will be postponed to the
following weekend: SAT OCT 2 with OCT 3 backup date.
We need 10 MPH W or NW wind to race on the big hill (450 feet).
Alternatively 15 MPG SW will work on the small hill (250 feet).
Notification of the decision will be sent in e-mail by 7:00 PM EDT
the evening before the race to those who have indicated in e-mail
that they wish to receive the e-mail notification.
Race day schedule:
10:00 AM: Registration opens
11:00 AM: Pilot's meeting
11:30 AM: Racing begins
There is no event entry fee and prizes will not be awarded.
There is a $10 day-use fee payable to Morningside Flight Park.
Parking at the top of the hill is limited. Cars will be allowed
to take planes and equipment to the top, drop off the gear, then
must return to the bottom to park for the day.
Food at the site is limited. Bring a sack lunch and drinks.
Remember the altitude and wind chill factor. Bring extra layers.
Academy of Model Aeronautics membership and insurance is required
and AMA cards must be shown at registration. However, this is not
an AMA sanctioned event. If we have 20 contestants, it can serve
as a League of Silent Flight contest.
While pre-registration is not required, we would appreciate
knowing in advance about those who intend to fly in the race.
Those who send an e-mail message to <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> with
"Interested in NESR" in the subject line at least 24 hours before
the scheduled race will be sent the prior evening confirmation or
postponement notice in e-mail.
