Stephen,
    Yes, the question does make sense and you're smart to ask it before 
installing your equipment.  (I'm assuming you live in the US)  Probably 95% 
of all fliers in the US are using what is known as mode 2 transmitters.  This 
puts the elevator and "main turn control" on the right hand stick.  In a full 
house sailplane, or a powered ship, the "main turn control" is normally 
ailerons, while the rudder is secondary.
    On a plane with no ailerons, just rudder and elevator, it is customary to 
use the right hand stick for the rudder.  Then, when you learn to make turns 
with your right hand, you won't have to relearn how to fly when you're ready 
for ailerons.  It makes good sense to set up your controls similar to what 
almost everyone else uses.  It makes it much easier to get flying help, and 
you'd be able to fly someone elses plane too.
