Sapphire 2M
Very interesting! Just so everyone knows that similar things happen, When I designed
the Sapphire 2M, 2 years before Airtronics had
a Sapphire, the name was unused as far as I knew. The design was submitted to Model
Builder magazine for publication. For some
reason, it didn't get published even though the editor was a good friend of mine(the
publisher has control of what goes in, and
when).
Several years went by and the Airtronics plane came out. When MB went under, the
plance was returned to me. I submitted it to
Flying Models, who eventually printed it. When we went into production, we called Ed
Whyte who now owned the rights to the
Airtronics Sapphire, if it was OK to use the name. He said fine as long as we used
the '2M' behind it, and if someone was looking
for the unlimited Sapphire, that we directed the purchaser his way.
I now have a Sapphir 100" in the works. I'll change the name of both of my designs
when the 100 reaches production. I have a list
of names I like. It seems the longer I stay in this hobby, the fewer new names come
up. I was going to name my next model the
"Orion", but Sal beat me to it. No biggie, I'll just come up with something else.
On the FMA thing, Trick RC is a small company, 2 brothers and mom as I understand it.
FMA is a larger company. I know that some
sales that Trick would have gotten will now go to FMA. GP did a similar thing when
they copied Andy Clanceys' Bee series. GP has a
full engineering staff, I think Andy works out of his garage. The Slow Poke was a low
blow in my opinion. gv
