I finished my new Victory RES today. I'm very pleased with the outcome. The
final weight is 63.5 oz. It flew really well the other day without spoilers;
much like my Grand Esprit -- and now I know why. It was probably three
ounces or so lighter then - which puts it almost into floater range. I think
you can float these things if they're closer to 60 than 70 oz. A 10 oz.
weight gain from 60 oz. is is 16.6%! I thought it would be a battle to keep
it under 70 oz., so I've done about everything within reason to save weight.
I've mentioned several of them in previous posts. Yesterday, I decided to
use flip-up spoilers to save the 50 g. (1.76 oz.) each that the Multiplex
spoilers weigh. I cut the wing skins to the spoiler size; 15" x 1.25". I
"filleted" the skins off - sanded them smooth on the bottom , and glued
them to hard balsa backings. Used JR 341 servos to directly push the
spoilers open - and hooked up a 0.025" wire to positively retract. I did
have to fabricate servo horns to get them long enough. The wings gained less
than 2 oz. each all together from virgin to finished product - including
the poly joints, spoilers, wire, and servos. The spoilers look great, too
as they are the identical skin used on the rest of the wing, and they
precisely follow the wing coutour, with tiny joints. I placed the spoilers
10.5" outboard of the wing root, and parallel to the trailing edge,. The
front of the spoiler is 6" in front of the trailing edge. The first spoiler
only took about 10 hours to make and get working properly. The second one
took 4. BTW, don't even think about using a cs10 or equivalent servo for
this!
I used a Hitec 555 receiver so as to allow the R-E servos (cs30) to come
as far forward as possible. Ask me how to run rudder-elevator-left
spoiler-right spoiler off a 555 with rudder&elevator on right stick only and
individual spoliers (not articulated - but they could easily be) on a 555
with a stylus (hint c-mixes). Love that radio!
If anyone else is building a like ship, I can supply digital pictures of
the details.
