Hey Gordy--
Can I come fly your event? At our SC2 contest on Sunday if the sheriff's chopper comes within view we will be ordered to dive below 400'. If I don't do it fast enough then both the me and timer will get zeros for the round!
Dan

Hi Dan!

During the MidSouth Soaring Championships, full size traffic into and around Louisville will be grounded (I think that's what Ed said anyway).

However, we do have a altitude restriction during every flight!  In order to avoid getting a zero for the round, we are limited to a max launch altitude of 4', with a max thermal altitude of 8'....but I think that's for the really lonnnng rounds.  Ed decided that for safety because he didn't want anyone having to look up toward the bright blue skies he's planning on having for the event, possibly causing cataracts in their eyes (Ed is very safety conscious)

The fun part about this is that the winch lines are likely to be DOUBLE the normal launch lengths, so keeping launch height under control is going to be fun....I'll bet there will be a lot of zeros on the field though:-) Sure wish you could come Dan, we could use another one on the field :-)

Ed's programmed in spotty rain this week in order to get the grass really green and the ground softened up to avoid fuse damage for those more enthusiastic landings.

He's being very scientific about testing the soil for just the right softness.  He's using a drop ball to test the soil's bounce.  The ball is 1' in diameter steel, and is dropped from the window of one of those annoying ice cream trucks that sell Bombsicles and Swirlytoots.. and the like.

As long as he get a .5mm bounce from the ground he's happy, so far its been a little too soft.

Never in the history of RC Soaring has anyone taken so much preparation, paid attention to detail, and considered every facet of Catch 22, Murphy's Law and Seinfeld, in order to insure that this MidSouth Soaring Championship will be one to be remembered

Don't forget the OverAll Champ will be beaten with a gorgeous engraved Louisville Slugger Bat....er I mean awarded...(really :-)

Eat your hearts out all you West Coast, East Coast its too far to walk-ites!

Gordy
