It's worse than that (but that's what I assumed, too)... I found this circuit diagram that shows how this done (http://www.cliftech.com/html/reverser.html).
The reversing gets into the nuts and bolts of the pulses coming in on the signal wire, changing the duration of the pulses... It's a great article, if nothing else.
