Always do a range check when messing with anything in the RF world.  Funny, I hade exactly the opposite experience.  The short duck was terrible, and the base loaded whip worked great.  Unfortunately the whip doesn't work on 50Mhz or I'd still have mine...

Yeah, but do some range checking before you use it with something serious - I apparently got a bad one a few years ago (for my JR 783), and almost killed an airplane finding out.  When I checked, it had about the same range as with the normal antenna collapsed!  Went back to adapter + Smiley rubber duckie (never a problem), may get around to returning the JR BL whip for a good one of these days.  Good Lift!
