I've been looking around for a spare plane for non-competition flying
but it seems that there aren't that many sailplane designs around these
days. With some exceptions all that seems to be available are TD
competition ships in the two categories "ultimate" and "last year's
model" and reformulated built-up beginner's polys such as the BoT.
There are quite a lot of self-launching sailplanes out there, though,
and they're quite competitively priced. This has started me thinking
whether anyone has had any experience in converting one of these for
pure soaring. The only unknown for me is how the wing would react to
winch launches.....in an electric configuration such a plane would be
carrying significant extra weight which will stress the wing as the
plane maneuvers but I doubt if the forces would come close to what could
be achieved winch launching.
