Actually my "tree story" took place at an ESL event in 2005 at the S. Jersey
Silent Flyers field. I was there with my fiancee who had never been to a
soaring event before. Kathy was with me all through out the flying
season as I
prepared to re-enter the competition arena again.
SO there I was... on final approach for what would have been one of my best
flights of the day... flying 7 minute task. I was in final 6m 45s on
the watch
and I was lined up just outside of the field. Mind you, the S. Jersey
field is
rather small and lined with trees all the way around the field. As my timer
was counting down the 5 second intervals... all of a sudden it was like the
tree grew an extra 10' as I stood there in amazement wondering why my plane
came to a complete halt... I NEVER SAW THE TREE! I was so focused on
the plane
I didn't see anything else. Meanwhile my timer didn't even indicate to
me that
I was about to drop the plane in a tree. He did stop the watch at 6m 50s... I
was bummed!
We were fortunate that we had a 50' lineman telescoping pole. With a bit of a
reach we were able to shake the plane out of the tree.. with only minimal
damage, not enough to keep me from flying out the last round.
I did ask the CD if I'd get my flying points for that flight... I argued that
the plane was "in" the flying field area... although the tree wasn't. Got a
big fat ZERO for the flight.
Of course my fiancee thought that was a "KODAK moment" and proceeded to
photograph the entire event...
It happens... when it does it leaves good memories.. maybe a broken plane, but
hey... It is all in fun!!
Take care.
Kurt
