Sorry Charlie! But this isn't close to an alternative to a Sportube. Anyone who has actually used a Sportube knows why too. This might be an alternative to a cardboard box, or one of the plastic sign material boxes...except that its around so way too much space would be wasted trying to fit wings and things....not sure which planes you think might have a Vertical short enough to fit something like this thing. Okay here is why, the number one reason actually listed one nite on Late Night....Sportubes became the number one choice of discerning sailplane contest pilots because.....they collapse. You get off the airline, pick up your Sportube, drag it to the rental car using its conveniently placed handles, rolling it on its wheels...only to find the car's back seat doesn't go down, and even it the backs do, theres no way a box of that girth and length is going to fit! What to do? :-) You undo the TSA padlock, slip the top off the Sportube, remove your plane parts, Plane Perch components and miscellaneous tape and tools...of course your Sirius charger...lay then on the back seat of the rental car, then collapse the Sportube to its 40" or so, and slip it in the trunk...adding your laptop case and check bag which has your TX and underwear for the weekend. You can tune a guitar, but you can't tune a fish...Charlie! :-) And are you ever going to show up at a contest in Florida while I visiting???? These are used to haul video tripods by air, they only open at one end, but that end can be adjusted in a 5-inch range up and down.
