You guys should have attended if you want to find out :) The sky is blue, with just the right amount of wind to make the tows go up fast!
The thermals began to develop early, so even the 30 footers were hard to see...way up there. I would say that at any one time there was a min of 10 planes in the tow cue...the tugs are extremely powerful, and they waste no time getting right back on the field to hook up the next sailplane. Planes are launching like machine gun fire so there are always multiple ships up at once. The site is a full size sailplane club site, so lots of visible horizon to most directions and the adjoining crops are pretty short at this time. The pilots are hard core big sailplane guys, so they are very serious about their models and flying...there is very little sitting around with this crowd! The Horizon boys are working their asses off, towing, keeping things like air space and landing zones safe and the tow planes fueled and prepared. I learned a lot about the this' and that's of aero tow that I would never have suspected...so a really good thing for me. As much as I would love to own a big stiffy (carbon scale ship), I think I'd enjoy flying the tugs too...but don't doubt for a minute that the tug pilots are WORKING....its no non sense, have a bit of fun on the way down....WORK. Heading home to Louisville...have some work to do on my new High End. You? Gordy **************Get trade secrets for amazing burgers. Watch "Cooking with Tyler Florence" on AOL Food.
