Go to an auto part store and ask for golf cart batteries.  We ran Rahm  
retrievers for years on these batteries.  you also need a charger that will  do 
6 
volts.  The battery does not need to be very large.  About half  the size of 
the 12 volt battery for the winch.  The retriever is under much  less load and 
the smaller 6 v retriever battery would out last two  batteries pulling the 
winch.

The pulley trick won't work for the Rahm retriever, it is direct  drive.  
Only way to slow it down is electronically, either with a 6 V  battery or 
cutting 
the voltage of a 12 V battery.
