Hi Gary, I used to have the same problem and thought it was because the resin was heating up too much causing the paint to release from the basswood plug. I do a similar plug finishing method as you except I add a coat or two of paint over the primer and then sand down from 1000 grit to 1500 then 2000 grit followed by swirl removing wax. Then I wax the whole thing 6-8 time with mold release wax. I found that the paint was still sticking, even with that much effort going into the plug. On my last mold, the production mold for my new Ka MHLG, I tried my old method of finishing the plug on one side and swabbing Frekote on the other side of the plug. (I had never used anything other than wax up to that point.) Sure enough, the non-Frekoted side stuck here and there and the coated side popped right out. Looks like the addition release agent did the trick. There are several flavors of release agent out there (Frekote, PVA etc.) to choose from. I have more information on plug and mold making on my website at http://jtmodels.net if you're interested. In the past I've always painted the plugs with a sandable automotive primer and then sanded down to about 600 grit prior to waxing. This seems to work just fine, except that a lot of the paint comes off in the mold and has to be cleaned out with acetone and then sanded in the mold. The nice thing about doing it this way is that paint really helps me to see any flaws in the plug. Would I be better off to just wax the basswood plug? Thanks guys.
