Walter,

The new Zagi 2000 airfoil is very similar to the Boomerang, so yours should
penetrate as well as the 'rang.

Perhaps your CG is too far back? I fly mine a bit sensitive at 7.5" Most
people fly it between 7-1/4 to 7-3/8" back from the nose. I'm not sure what
the Zagi folks recommend in their instructions, but perhaps this is the
cause.

As for ballast, if there's enough lift to for you to climb, you can add
ballast. However, I have had the Boomerang ( and it was a very light one)
in 30+mph winds with no ballast with no problem.

Ballast just makes you retain energy better and improve your speed a bit.
For combat, the added speed is unwanted. It makes targeting your opponent
much harder, because you have to PRECISELY calculate your closing vectors.
If your wing is approximately the same speed, flying a tight pattern is
easier and you will get your kill that much quicker.

Another issue about penetration, are your throws too much? I use a lot of
aileron, but I have TONS of exponential to soften it up. Flying with just
enough deflection to induce the turn is very important in preventing the
elevons from stalling the wing. I fly elevator with very little throw, but
almost no expo. Frank Cavazos recently showed me how to mix Rudder coupling
into my Futaba 8U, and that's a really fun setup. I get twice the aileron
throw using the rudder stick. I like diving in on my opponent in a reverse
immelman with several snap rolls on the vertical leg. Why? 'cause it's fun!

Cheers,
