I do believe much high tech ass remained unkicked. :) On Saturday, Paul
Siegel kept the world safe for six servos with his Mantis. All I've heard was
that the Mantis is not pretty, but apparently, pretty isn't necessarily a
component of competitive flying. Saturday was unusual in having the second
and third place "winners" each score a ZERO flight. The air was variably big
and then suddenly uncooperative. Jim Bacus suffered from what could only have
been a radio hit as he came home from downwind with his Agate. Straight down
from about 40 feet. Although the damage was minimal, he finished into second
place with his Cobra. After having applied what I thought was the convincing
"flying by yourself for 5 minutes in a 10 minute round" nail in the coffin,
my fortunes quickly changed, when in the very next round, I fail to put my
Sharon into sustainable air. Not only did I manage to land outside the box to
garner a ZERO for the round, but Paul Siegel had smashed his way out of the
coffin, and maxed the round with his beautifully ugly Mantis. Without even
the dignity of a radio hit, I'm just a lucky dumbass who finished third.
On Sunday, Karl Miller kicked the ass of all comers with his Victory C. Now
that plane does have some wood on it and Karl just piled up Max flights like
Y2k'ers stacked bottled water in their basements. He had it on automatic for
Sunday. He also strapped the big glass eagle into his van for the ride home
after having won the OVSS overall season championship. Way to go Karl! You
are the Great New Hope of the Midwest. We beseech you, deliver us all from
Left Coast soaring dominance! :) Oh well, that's enough of what I remember,
maybe some of the other contestants can report their perspective. Thanks to
LOFT for a great weekend, Marc Gellart for all of his efforts in organizing a
fantastic event and to Bob Massman for coming down to provide computer
scoring, which really makes the seeded Man on Man format practically possible.
