Your friend is doing the right thing - experimenting.  In addition to
length of bungee and line, you can also play with the hook location.

Start with garden variety surgical tubing and work your way up to the
'hose'; when your plane starts to flutter, back off a bit.  Beware that
even a small bungee has the potential to cause serious injury if the spike
comes back in your face - don't trust that screwdriver!
