I now live in Oregon but I am originally from New Mexico. Every
time I went to the top of the Sandia Mountains I wondered why I
never saw anyone flying RC up there. I wondered if there was
anywhere to really land. It would seem that with the advent of EPP
that finding a place to land wouldn't be as critical. I know that the
Sandias are hang gliding heaven and it would seem to be a RC
sloper's paradise with its huge lift potential, given you could find a
decent LZ. I haven't been back since I started flying RC sailplanes
and wanted to know what the story was and has been through the
years. Conflict with hang gliders? Not allowed because of State
Park rules? Radio interference from the towers? Sure disaster if
you land down the slope? Or was I just not there at the right time?
Any comments from present and past New Mexicans would be
helpful. I would love to hear about any past or present success up
on Watermelon Mountain too! I think about sloping it often.
