My ride in the Grob 103 was great but it could have been better. Let me explain. I spent the dough for the 1 hour ride. My ride was supposed to begin at 2pm but delays caused it to be pushed to 3:15. I recommend that anyone wanting to try this be very flexible in scheduling. I originally wanted to get a video of the entire event but that is only available on their Schweizer 2-32 but I didn't want to "step down" to that because I wanted the aerobatics of the Grob. Anyway, the tow plane (an L-19 from the Korean and Vietnam war/conflict eras) dragged us up to just over 4000ft (I was told it would take us to 5000) and we went hunting for thermals over the ocean. A couple minutes after we released from the tow plane my wife called me on the cell phone. We didn't find much of anything so the pilot took me through some aerobatics. The first maneuver was an aileron roll. The pilot pointed the nose down and pulled up at about 100 knots then started the roll. After the roll out I let my stomach recover for a few minutes before the next maneuvers. We kept searching for thermals but all we encountered was sink. The pilot then decided to get the rest of the aerobatics in before we had to land and get towed up again. We went through a series of loops, rolls and stall turns that were very impressive. By this time the flight was at the 30 minute mark. As we headed back I decided that it was best to take a raincheck on the remaining 30 minutes. I had already twisted my stomach in knots and I didn't want to redecorate the interior of the sailplane so I quit while I was still able to walk away with a bit of dignity. I was given a coupon for another 30 minute scenic flight in the Schweizer 2-32 and $10 off the video if I want it. My daughter called me after the flight and was a bit upset that I didn't include her so I promised the next flight to her. I will be taking her and her best friend there tomorrow after school for their ride. I'll probably spring for the video if they get the sound problem worked out (it didn't record any sound on the elderly couple's flight today). I'm pretty sure that ground school and flight instruction are in my future. Jody Z RCSE-List facilities provided by Model Airplane News.
