I've always understood that it was a Lockheed F-80 (P-80?) Shooting Star that was
involved in the first ever jet-to-jet battle when it shot down a MiG-15 in Korea.

Never heard claims of a prop driven airplane going supersonic, but I have heard
claims/rumors that a British pilot had gone supersonic before the X-1, and similar
stories to the one you mention about an American plane.
