Greetings to the group. I was tuning up a Supreme RX on 53.4 Mhz and discovered a problem that may effect receivers on the 72/75 Mhz bands as well. While tuning the antenna coil the Heathkit vacuum tube voltmeter (it's a long story) needle started jumping around. If I picked up the receiver and thumped it the trouble did not recur. It was found that the red shrink insulation around the antenna wire had been pierced by the sharp wires sticking up from the PC board lands. When I pressed down to tune the coil the antenna wire shorted to another part of the input circuit. Since I use a towel under the RX it seems that the trouble was caused by the case bottom and not the tuning procedure. To verify your RX is okay, simply remove the two screws from the case bottom, remove the whole case and pull the antenna wire back part way through the circuit board hole. You can then inspect the underside of the shrink tubing. I hope this saves somebody an aircraft.
