NiCd and Ni-MH charge the same, except that Ni-MH have a much less pronounced negative peak when they enter overcharge (this is the point when most chargers turn off or switch to a very low rate like C/50). The switch likely controls the charger's peak sensitivity. I had a similar charger (no switch, but rated for both) for the Ni-MH I use in my digital camera. One day I discharged the freshy charged 1600 mAh cells on my Alpha 4 at the 500 mA discharge rate ... and was shocked to get only about 800 mAh! After charging on the Alpha 4 at 160 mA I again discharged it and got over 1700 mAh. I threw away that lame Ni-MH charger, and only use my Alpha 4 now. -- Andrew E.
