Would anyone happen to have plans for building a
winch? I have a starter motor and am able to weld <thanks to one of my other
hobbies-- offroad vehicles>, but I can't see spending several hundred dollars
for a premanufactured item.

Rick,
The Rahm winch is
named for it's creator, Cy Rahm. He must have made a trainload of 'em
because I see them all over. It uses the Ford longshaft starter motor, and
3" diameter hub that is more or less standard for AMA thermal duration
launching. As far as I know, Cy doesn't make them any more, but used ones
turn up from time to time, sometimes equipped with "Real Balls" ball
bearing end plates.
