Servos would not work so well, there is not enough travel and the
resolution is not great enough.  However, a CNC machine built with a few
cheap stepper motors can be quite good.  The cost is a lot less than one
would expect,
provided that person is willing to put a bit of work into it.   I
believe
most machines used for doing 3d machine work are at least 5 controls,
x,y,z, tilt in 2 directions.
