The way I see this, it's like putting retreads on a Ferarri.  The high performance 
planes of today cost $600 and up.  Yes standard
(non digital) servos work fine in most circumstances, but the digitals are simply 
better.  I doubt you'll find any winning pattern
pilot that uses standard servos.  Ask anyone that has used digital servos about the 
difference and you'll understand what I mean.
Like most of us, I'm on a limited budget and can't afford $1000 molded plane and 
another $500 in servos.  But, I do try to put the
best items I can afford, and I think the elevator servo is THE place to use a digital.
