Apparently inspired by events in the middle east and New York a local
homeowner in Laguna Niguel has redefined slope combat for us. He set himself
up with a high-powered air rifle and a good vantage point for sniping (his
back yard), and started banging away at our planes. Due to his location and
the wind we didn't figure out what was going on until three of our planes had
had holes blasted through them. A particularly solid hit on a JW pulled the
elevon partially off and caused it to crash down the hill. My Wizard merely
had a nice chunk of foam and skin blown out of the middle of one wing and an
Obechi-covered Hobby People Euro-thingy had the basswood leading edge
shattered by a round that passed through the wind at an angle, entering the
bottom about an inch behind the LE and exiting through it. After we spotted
the shooter, he acknowledged us by wanging a round off the top of our
frequency board shelter. At this point we landed, moved off to a safe
distance and dialed 9-11. Three cop cars arrived, and everyone got to talk
to the police. If anything interesting evolves from all this I'll let you
all know. In the meantime if you fly at the Laguna Niguel slope be aware that
there is a more than slightly unstable dude, about 6' 2" tall and 240 pounds
(big-belly) with longish black hair and a SERIOUS dislike for glider guys. He
lives in/shoots from the house immediately to the south of the park
overlooking the slope.
