Ok, I have nearly reached a decision!

I found a shop which has a Flair Sunrise kit!!! Im going to buy this and save
it for later (after I have built the DH Mosquito which has been sitting in
the box for 18 months).

I now know that I will either buy the BOT, Big Bird or Majestic.

The BOT is the cheapest and I can get the kit in the UK so no expensive
customs or shipping charges. The Big Bird is 100" which is good as it leaves
more comps open for entry. The Majestic looks like the most modern and
versitile model, but is also the most expensive, and heaviest (I think).

Could anyone who has flown 2 of these give a comparison?

Is the BOT a reasonable fast build?

Are there many comps in the UK for open class RES / Non-composite models or
would I be best to stick to 100"?

Sorry for all the questions, I have lost touch with the TD world over the
last few years.

Justin

Justin:

Take a look at Skybench. They have the OLY II kits and the Big Bird. Ray
doesn't show the Osprey on his website anymore, but you could ask about
them. http://www.skybench.com/

You might take a look at NSP's Kestrel 100.

Good luck on your quest.

There are the John Stevens Eliminator models, but they are not cheap and
there is LOADS of work to do on them, Im building his HLG and that is
painful
(need to build a vac bagger).

The BOT looks great and I would be able to get the kit in the UK, I am
however tempted by the Big Bird as it is 100" (can use in 100 comps) and has
spoilers.

Majestic, kit looks very fast to build, great quality kit, but really think
it looks ugly, and I have never really liked slow flying v-tail models (have
a HLG with vtail and it just mushes).

At the end of the day I just want a versitile thermal model which will make
the most of the small amounts of lift that we seem to get around here. Not
too heavy on construction time. Cheap and strong.

A friend of mine had a Flair Sunrise, that was an amazing glider, I flew it
a
few times and never had a short flight. Wish I could get a kit for this
now,
its such a shame they stopped it. The same with the Sailplanes
International
Osprey 100", I had one of these. I brought it second hand for 25. Nylon
covered it was very strong, yet it thermaled great! I lost it when I
specked
out a few summers ago.

1: Get used to it. I'm in Canada where the dollar is $0.65 USD,
I have to pay shipping and customs too. Everything is made in
the U.S. it seems. If you do find a UK native kit, post about
it for the benefit of others.

    Majestic : $159 USD + shipping http://www.laserartco.com/
Bird of Time: $65 USD + shipping http://www.towerhobbies.com/

2: They don't get much lighter for the size. A BoT will fly on
gopher gas, hence my remark about adding spoilers (you don't
    have to of course).

    Majestic : 110", 990 sqin, 60-70 oz (8.7-10.2 oz/sqft)
    Bird of Time: 118", 1070 sqin, 41-52 oz (5.5- 7 oz/sqft)

I hope you find a suitable flying machine :)
