I've heard three good excuses for using a Duck:
   1) Flying at a crowded slope
   2) Flying a helicopter
   3) Controlling any surface vehicle
The three aren't usually done at speck heights/distances, and the last
two often snip their receiver antennas too (on purpose and by accident).

I think if you plan an outing of sloping/combat/DS'ing, a Duck is fine,
but you might want to remove it if you are chasing thermals or otherwise
pushing the range.

P.S. A one inch receiver antenna doesn't work well regardless of the
transmitter antenna length (found out the hard way it broke on the
previous hard landing).
