Hi Jim, You say you use it for speed control, do you mean you have a sliding connection along the steel bar that works like a car accelerator for the winch?

Jim, I use a strip of stainless steel to drop the voltage on my winches for speed control. This is much easier than pulsing. You could run a similar strip of stainless in your drive circuit of your retriever. Try 1" wide, .032" thick and about 18" long to start with.
