Jack,
A club with a turnout of 10 people can run an F3b contest. A "national
caliber one"...No way! But a contest, sure! There would need to be
reasonable levels of expectation, and EVERYONE will have to work. Form 5
teams of 2, or some "equal" setup. Perhaps even 2 teams of 5! Ideally you
ahve teams of 3 though...that makes it easy to talk about so here goes.
Duration. EASY!!!! You don't need tond of equipment, nor do you need
tons of stuff. 1 helper, 1 flier, 1 scorer. This works great. Having 6
winches is ideal, but having less is ok as well. Hey, you can even use
retirevers if you want! Just "adapt" the time a little to allow it to go.
Anyway, duration is man on man. 12 minute round, 10 minute duration.
Simple 1 meter circle landings. One person from any team "opens" the round
with a talking timer set to 12 minutes. Each flier launches, ideally on
separate winches, but one winch is ok as well. Add workign time if
necessary if there is a problem. BE FLEXIBLE! The helper can call for
them, and the timer...well they time! Remember, FAI rules so the time stops
when the plane stops, not when it hits the ground. Make a safety area (-100
pts if in it). Remember, being moving when the 12 minute timer goes to zero
is no landing points (I think that is the penalty...it might be more!). Mix
the groups up to allow people to fly against different people. 3 rounds
should set a good round robin and only take a bit of time.
Distance. Ok...time to work hard here. Again, 1 timer, 1 pilot, and 1
base B spotter. The timer is also the base A turn person and lap counter,
and line runner, etc. 7 minute working time the flight time of 4 minutes
starts when the plane flies from behind base A towards Base B. You have 4
minutes to fly as many laps as possible. Use portable radios to call form
Base B to base A. IT works GREAT! Be honest and flexible. A talkign timer
helps, and add time for winch problems if using retirevers.
Speed. EASY!!!! Only one at a time. Use 2-3 timers, 1 base B, and one
base A. You can have plenty of helpers. Go for it.
I can see 3 rounds easy! And to be honest it is not as hard as it sounds.
3 rounds is 9 flights per person...similar to TD!
Jason
