Fred, Thanks for the write up. I have a feeling I know what the optimum plane would be for such a contest...and 10 of us were flying them yesterday.
We had an impromptu hand launch session in Valencia. Joe had given me a call to fly on the weekend, I called Bill Watson and Lex..and the phone tree was in session. We just flew all up last down. It was a great morning of flying. No score sheets, but everyone was trying hard and working on their skills. Bill was flying his 100" DLG, all 19 oz. worth. If you are talking 150' of launch height, I'll take a hand launch over any other set up. At that altitude, low speed handling becomes very important, and I know the smaller, lighter plane would have a big advantage over any 3 meter plane. The same high pressure system was over our field, but guys were working little bubbles at 25' for a minute and a half. One wrong turn and you are toast. I personally think there is more skill involved in this type of flying than any other, but I'm biased. Skill or not, it was fun, which is what it's all about. JE -- Erickson Architects John R.
