I take it that you have never compared a *balanced* dipole with
a vertical then ? Simply switching between the two on receive is
quite revealing.  Try it and then decide if the dipole can indeed
reduce noise.

Remembering of course that the dipole needs to be fed with a 
suitable balanced feeder. If using coax as a feeder then you 
must use a balun at the feed point to overcome the problem of
using coax, which is an *unbalanced* line.
