2003 International Hand Launch Glider Festival The Torrey Pines Gulls and AIRTRONICS are pleased to announce the tenth annual International Hand Launch Glider Festival (IHLGF) will take place June 7 and 8 at the TPG Poway Flight Center, Poway (San Diego), California. The international reputation that the IHLGF has developed over the years is due in great part to a combination of the competition format that the IHLGF has created and the wealth of championship caliber pilots from all over the world that gather each year in Poway to battle for the unofficial World Championship of HLG. You don't have to be a world caliber pilot to have a great time at the IHLGF. The sheer joy of two days (actually three or four for most pilots) of flying HLG's with a great group of pilots, combined with the "social" aspect of the IHLGF is what makes this "event" so popular. As for the international aspect of the IHLGF, as of this date, we have commitments from pilots from New Zealand, Canada, and Japan. We are also expecting participants from Switzerland, Argentina and Texas. Germany and Austria have also indicated an interest. We love our international pilots! Not only are they great pilots but they are always great ambassadors for their countries. After two years of adapting the Tasks and Rules to adjust to the Discus Style Launch (DSL) we have, what we feel is, a finished product. With one minor revision from last years Tasks, the rest of the contest format that has proven so popular will remain the same. You can expect 6 rounds of competition on Saturday, followed by four rounds on Sunday. The top ten pilots, as determined by the 10 rounds of open competition, will compete in a three round fly off to determine the 2003 IHLGF Champion and final standing for the remaining nine pilots. Awards will be given through tenth place. Additionally, there will be a Junior (age 15 and under) Championship and three Eagle (55+) Class awards. The entry fee for the two-day contest will be $50. Included in the entry fee will be a complementary lunch on Saturday and Sunday. Entries will be limited to 90 pilots. The official registration packet will be mailed the first week in March.
