I don't know about everyone else's experiences, but I have been flying since 1977 and don't recall ever using a 6 volt winch. I think 12 volt winches with long-shaft Ford starter motors were the standard by then.

The 6 volt winches of the 70's were actually a 12 volt Ford long shaft motor with a 6 volt battery and nobody ever heard of a zoom launch. Now we use 6 volt motors with 12 volt batteries rebuilt with ball bearings and those who never flew these wonderful old designs fold wings when zooming with modern winches.
