I would say the 290 lb is more typical of what I saw over the last two contests seasons. It has nothing to do with rocks or brambles, or heavy models. It has everything to do with STRONG launches the guys are doing these days, and keeping the lines from breaking during a contest.
#30 is practically rope. You fellas must have a lot better eye sight and stronger planes for those Low Earth Orbit (LEO) insertions you are performing :)
Seriously though, use whatever works for you. I use a #18/#21 1:2 mix for my admittedly wussy non-contest, sport flying, launching needs.
