I could think of nothing more boring than going to a contest and having to fly around in circles for 60 minutes. I like the landing portions of the contests, to me thats when things really start to get exciting.
I feel the only time the soaring portion of a contest is as exciting as the landings is if you are really scratching for lift, working that little bubble at 50 feet for your max

That is the problem today, everything is geared towards the Visalia type contest, at least on the West coast. Landings are the thing, not flying.
I like soaring, the flying part. Landing is just the final phase of the flying part. I design my contest to emphasize on flying, not dorking. The only reason to have a point landing to for scoring seperation, so not everyone came in first of last!
If you only like landing, just like Jonh D. said, just fly a 1 minutes duration and go for the landings. Then soaring is not really for you.
That is why I really like Scale soaring, aero-tow, where landings are just to get the plane back on the ground, no contest at all.
