Thought I'd jump in with my $0.02. I've been using 'edge' sharpening products by these guys:

http://www.accusharp.com/

for years. For Exacto type blades, I have one of their "SturdyMount Knife Sharpeners" (about 3/4" x 3/4" x 2-1/2") screwed down on the corner of my workbench. Two swipes, I'm done.

Harley Michaelis said that those gizmos for sharpening # 11 blades are
worthless, but I've had good luck with mine. Doesn't seem to take any
longer than getting out a new blade. My blade consumption is way down.
It is important to put a drop of water or something on the stone to keep
it from clogging up.
