what bird could it be?

That scissor tail suggests a Frigate bird. Or a very large Tern.

I suppose it was a Frigate. While I was on a trip in Cuba I have seen some of them glide for a wonderfully long time (from vertical to out of sight) in straight line at high altitude apparently not loosing altitude .

They seemed to be very very good flyers. Their wings are dark top side and underside. They are very big birds.
