Hi Ray,
I decided to go to Dan Borer's New Year's Day gathering at the SWSA field. We had about 20 guys out enjoying the first soaring day of the year. We had pretty bad weather here in California today, there is a winter storm coming through with heavy alto-cirrus stuff at 20k. This amounts to having a 60%-70% filter on the Sun. We had a great day but it was 11:30 before the first thermals triggered. I launched at 11:37 and managed 55:12 with my 2 meter Volant. This 9 year old model features a glass fuselage, wood wings and tail, with aSD3021 section. I was timed by Frank Corsaro AMA 7265. When I landed the Volant I switched to my Comet 176" Eppler 205 Wood wings and glass fuselage.
This was a good combination for the next hour or so, while Mike Reagan and Merrill Brady kept me company. I got to about 2500'-3000' a couple of times but the cirrus stuff came back and shut the field off a little after 2:00 PM. I struggled in some light stuff but had to surrender at 1:35.09. It was a laugh to fly the Comet again, this one hadn't been airborne since 89 or 90. I had a fun day and want to thank both you and Dan for getting us to get out and fly. And a special thanks to Dan and my other friends from SWSA that stuck around to watch me land. Regards Larry Jolly
